Heathrow airport are set to introduce a mixed mode operation for both runways, using both for take off and landing, increasing plane traffic by 60,000 flight a year.
At present, BAA operate the runways separately, one for take off and one for landing, but switiching on a daily basis. The new proposal could see both runways being used at the same time. The flight paths would have to be changed and may increase noise pollution in the surrounding areas.
The approval will be determined by the Government, but currently is a better option than building a 3rd runway and 6th terminal. The proposal could be introduced as soon as early 2010.
